Foundations of Fifth Grade

In fifth grade, students continue to grow in their relationship with God. A major focus is to prepare the students for Junior High.  Students develop independent planning skills through their daily, weekly, and monthly assignments. They continue to read and do research for information with higher level thinking skills being encouraged. Students are also given many opportunities to be in front of the class with oral reports, presentations, and drama to help build poise and self-confidence in public speaking.
 
Religion

Focus on Old Testament history.
Grow in key faith concepts.
Memorize chief parts of Luther's Small Catechism as well as assorted hymns and Bible verses.
Daily devotions, prayer in the classroom, and weekly chapel services are held at Emanuel.
 

Reading

Use Read Naturally Comprehension program.
Participate in the Accelerated Reader Program.
Read fluently, accurately, and with expression.
Monthly book report presentation to class.
Novel Studies used to strengthen literary and Comprehension skills.
Quality literature stories built into a basal reader.
Increase skills in compare/contrast, summarize, time order, identify main ideas, identify topic sentences, identify turning points, story mapping with plot/setting/character, drawing conclusions, locating information in a text, identify fact & opinion, and identify cause & effect.
 

English

Shurley Method used.
Classify words and sentences by parts of speech.
Use graphic organizers.
Write expository essays.
Change writing from first person to third person.
Peer editing.
Change paragraphs from one tense to another.
 

Mathematics

Use manipulative and/or drawings to solve problems.
Compare and order decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers.
Change fractions into decimals.
Problem solving through multiple problem-solving strategies.
Graphs - drawing and interpret bar, line, double bar, picture, and stem and leaf.
Write algebraic expressions and equations.
Checking answers for accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness.
Estimating and rounding numbers/answers.
Place value through billions.
Mastering math facts through speed tests given in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
 

Social Studies

Investigate and describe historical development of the United States from pre-Columbian times through the American Revolution.
Native American tribes in early America.
Learn about explorers such as Columbus, DeSoto, Balboa, Magellan, Vespucci.
Learn about important documents in the development of our country.
Understand, draw, and read maps.
Participate in the Exchange City program offered by Junior Achievement.
Long-term project on colonies.
 

Science

Read and understand step-by-step directions.
Develop a scientific process through observing, predicting, measuring, collecting data, estimating, inferring, classifying, communicating, and journaling.
Investigate systems of the body.
Understand scientific vocabulary as it relates to units studied.
Work with group/team as well as independently in scientific discovery.
 

Art

Through a variety of mediums, students are able to enhance his/her art appreciation.
Recognize important works of art and respective artists.
 

Computer

Learn to use Microsoft Power Point.
Type to Learn program used.
Learn to use Kid Pix and produce a project with it.
Use Internet to locate information.
Type paragraphs.
Use CD ROM of supplemental material in subject areas.
Be able to create document, copy, cut, paste, bold, insert, change fonts, adjust font size, add graphics, and print.
